Conservation & Education Efforts

The Duck River in Tennessee spans 283 miles and stands as North America's most biologically diverse freshwater river. It is home to a plethora of aquatic life with approximately 62 mussels, 22 aquatic snails, and 183 fish species. The presence of such a variety of life serves as evidence of its water quality. The river is maintained by the freshwater mussels that filter several gallons each every day.

The Duck River Watershed has historically been an essential resource for Marshall County. From Native Americans utilizing the river in various ways to the establishment of a Milltown by the Wilhoite family, the Duck River has served communities on the land now part of Henry Horton State Park.

As a state park and protector of the river, we aim to educate all on the importance of the Duck River’s history, ecology, and current impact.

As a state park and guardian of the river, our goal is to educate everyone about the significance of the Duck River's history, ecology, and present impact. We achieve this by offering programs led by rangers and seasonal interpretive staff. Our Duck River Education Room is another great resource that gives a deeper look into what makes the river so unique.
